Leaky toilets are the #1 source of water waste in multi-family housing. Leaky toilets are usually easy to fix, but very hard to detect - especially in large multi-family buildings. The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) has conducted a successful pilot project with a technology provider that provides remote leak detection in a low-income multi-family housing building. This new "Internet-of-Things" (IoT) technology  identifies leaks and sends real-time alerts to property managers so they can quickly address it.

This project will deploy the leak detection technology in low-income, multi-family housing in Los Angeles, California. The water, energy, and associated utility bill savings will be measured to help build the business case for scaled-up deployment of this technology in future phases of the project.
